Primer Seal Trial: Lower Trafficked Rural Pavements in Yarriambiack Shire
Council
March 2015
For this project, we trialled a variety of primer seal pavement treatments on a low trafficked rural road. The purpose was to help customers find a cost effective treatment for future primer seals and to evaluate the life span of different primer seal treatments. The treatment types were 5pts BSRS, C320, HBCE and Polyseal and the material involved 7mm, 10mm and 7mm/14mm, with standard 5ptsBSRS Primerseal 14mm/7mm 5km down the road to compare. We are currently awaiting evaluation feedback from the client.CentreState Asphalting

January 2016
Centre State Asphalting (CSA) undertook large-scale modifications to its asphalt plant in the second half of 2015 to enable the manufacture of a full range of VicRoads mixes, and recycle waste products. This enabled CSA to target and successfully secure the VicRoads Northern Region annual maintenance contract for the first time in early 2016. We began on 6 January, with due date of completion achieved on 14 May 2016. The challenge with undertaking this contract, which involved 25,140 tonnes of asphalt with 20SI, 10SMAH, 14HP, 14H, 10H, 10OG and 20SP mixes, was the detailed planning and compliance with exacting VicRoads contractual requirements over a broad location of pavements from Swan Hill to the Calder Highway near Gisborne. It also required 21,870m2 of spray sealing (10mm Geo Seal and 10mm SAMI). Every pavement location was unique in terms of stakeholder management, risk profile, and construction requirements. In particular, a large segment of the works was scheduled to be undertaken at night within Bendigo itself, requiring careful traffic management and residential/business liaison. In addition, CSA manufactured and placed stone mastic asphalt for the first time, and although challenging at first, many valuable lessons and improved construction techniques were quickly acquired throughout the contract and delivered successfully.CentreState Asphalting Asphalt Production
Strategically located between the regional centres of Bendigo and Ballarat the Centre State Asphalting production facility is ideally positioned to service central Victoria as well as the broader Northern and Western districts.
Commissioned in 2011, the company owned 120 tonne per hour production facility meets stringent EPA emission standards with a newly installed baghouse dust and fume extraction system.
Supported by a fully registered NATA accredited laboratory, the computer controlled production facility manufactures a range of consistent asphalt mixes in accordance with VicRoads registered mix designs.
Process improvement initiatives slated for 2014 are focused on expanding the range of products, reducing energy consumption and increasing production flexibility. The CentreState Asphalting production plant will soon become regional Victoria’s leading environmentally focused facility with the introduction of recycled materials and the use of natural gas as the primary energy source.
Asphalt delivery from the production facility is supported by a range of truck configurations to provide maximum flexibility to delivery to all types of jobs, from driveways to major freeway upgrades, and distances as far as the New South Wales and South Australian borders under all temperature ranges.
CentreState Asphalting Material Testing
Centre State Asphalting pride themselves on providing a range of quality Vicroads approved and speciality asphalt mixes to suit all pavement requirements.
The laboratory, based at the asphalt production facility, is NATA registered and operates to a strict set of externally audited quality standards. The laboratory’s focus is driven by our customers’ requirements for accurate testing and reporting of asphalt mix constituents, and providing the right asphalt type to match each individual customer’s operating pavement environment.
To achieve consistent asphalt mixes, the production facilities employees’ focus on managing the quality of material inputs, and carefully monitor and manage each stage of the production process. Each truck load of asphalt mix is visually inspected to ensure uniformity, and representative random samples tested for consistency.
The quality focus of CentreState extends throughout the company. The contracting services quality system is audited as part of the Vicroads accreditation system whenever work is undertaken on the State road network. The number one priority when undertaking any work is the safety of employees, subcontractors, clients and most importantly the general public.
